A Bust for Margaret Desenfans: The Forgotten Female Founder of the Dulwich Picture Galley, 2018
(collaboration with Joseph Steele)
Margaret Desenfans (1737-1814) or (1731-1814) was one of three founders of Dulwich Picture Gallery. In 1757, aged 20. In 1776, she married the art collector and dealer Noel Desenfans. She, her French husband, and their friend Francis Bourgeois would eventually build up an art collection which became the basis of Dulwich Picture Gallery in London.
Despite playing a pivotal role in the creation of the gallery and collection, there is no bust of Margaret in the mausoleum where she is interred alongside her husband Noel Desenfans and Sir Peter Francis Bourgeois. Joseph Steele and I decided to start a project to create a marble bust of Margaret based on the only painting of her ever made, working with the Friends of the Dulwich Picture Gallery and gallery staff.
